So its the 25th of December, the birthday of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, and all the tv channels and newspapers are proudly showing this quote by Stanley Wolpert:

Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three.

But I have always found that this quote just highlights everything that is wrong about Pakistan. Surely, a nation-state should be formed (if we should really have them at all) when there is an overwhelming desire from the masses to organise themselves as a state.

On the other hand, the quote by Wolpert shows how Pakistan was created as a result of political bargaining by a tiny section of political leaders – and the opinion of the masses was, for the most part, ignored.
